When Wealth Outgrows Output: McKinsey's 2025 Divergence and the On-Chain Repricing Machine

Video | 0xHasu |

When a balance sheet grows faster than a factory, you are not watching an economy expand. You are watching a repricing.

McKinsey found that in 2025, wealth grew faster than the real economy. Crypto media relayed the finding in a brief of roughly two hundred words. It contained four assertions and no numbers. No wealth growth rate. No GDP figure. No inflation print. No Gini coefficient. No methodology note, no sample, no caliber definitions. I read that brief the way I read a token whitepaper: first for what is claimed, then for what has been deliberately left off the page.

A divergence is not a growth story. It is an accounting event โ€” the difference between creating value and revaluing it. And the asset class I cover has been running that divergence as a business model since 2020.

The relay chain matters as much as the finding. An original McKinsey study was compressed by a crypto outlet into a market brief, which is the version most readers will ever encounter. Each hop loses methodology. What survives is a thesis: wealth accumulation is increasingly driven by asset price appreciation rather than production, and the consequences are instability and inequality.

That thesis sits on three planes. Wealth and output have decoupled. The engine of wealth is asset inflation. The result is a K-shaped split between those who hold assets and those who hold wages.

The brief does not touch monetary policy, fiscal policy, trade, or industrial strategy. I will not invent them. Four of the eight dimensions a macro reader would expect are simply absent, and extrapolating from absence is how bad analysis gets published. What I can do is test the surviving thesis against the one market where every repricing is timestamped and every wallet is public.

Crypto is the highest-beta expression of asset inflation ever built. That is not a moral statement. It is a structural one.

Start with the accounting identity. Wealth equals quantity multiplied by price. Output equals quantity multiplied by productivity. In a healthy economy the two move together, because the second term anchors the first. When price detaches from productivity, wealth grows on paper while nothing new is produced. Every wealth figure that outruns output is a valuation multiple, not a value.

Now apply the identity to a token. Market capitalization equals circulating supply multiplied by the last traded price. That last-trade price might come from a single wallet swapping five thousand dollars into a thin pool. Because only the marginal trade sets the mark, a five-thousand-dollar buy can print a hundred million dollars of "wealth" on a dashboard. Nothing was produced. The ledger was revalued. I trace the wallet, not the whisper.

I first understood this as an undergraduate auditing the 0x Exchange v1 contracts, where signature malleability and nonce handling allowed a relay to be replayed. The lesson I took from that work was not about the exploit. It was that the number the interface displays is an assertion, and the state the contract holds is a fact. Those two things are allowed to disagree, and when they disagree, the interface is usually lying.

DeFi Summer of 2020 was the same divergence wearing a yield curve. Compound and Aave were lending markets; the farms built on top were repricing instruments. Liquidity mining paid farmers in a token whose price was set by the farmers themselves. Yield was not income. It was dilution, labeled as income, priced by the recipients. I modeled the liquidation cascades that summer because the collateral ratios made them arithmetically inevitable, and I was told the model was too pessimistic. It was not pessimistic. It was descriptive. When the yield is too high, the exit is rigged.

Terra-Luna was the end state of this architecture, industrialized. Anchor advertised a yield that did not exist in the economy; it existed in the mint. UST and LUNA were two sides of one repricing machine, and the seigniorage loop minted the numbers it promised. Sixty billion dollars of "wealth" had no producing asset behind it. Governance was concentrated enough that the parameters could not be changed even after the failure was legible. Regulators arrived after the evaporation, not before. Nothing in that sequence was a surprise to anyone who had read the mechanism instead of the marketing.

The dashboard problem is identical at the macro level. Central banks watch consumer prices; the inflation happens in assets. The on-chain version of this is TVL. Total value locked is a repricing metric dressed as a usage metric, and it inflates whenever a token's price rises because the same deposits are simply marked higher. Protocol teams learned to double-count, to count their own governance token as liquidity, and to announce TVL growth in the same quarter their actual settlement volume fell. When a metric can rise without a single new user, it is not a metric. It is a marketing channel.

Two narratives in this cycle are pure repricing instruments. Tokenized real-world assets have spent three years as a storytelling exercise, because the institutions that own the assets already have settlement rails that clear faster and cheaper than a public chain, and they are not going to migrate custody to a permissionless ledger to gain nothing. Announcements move the token. The settlement volume stays where it was. Hype is the only asset in a vacuum mint.

The same is true of the data availability layer. Dedicated DA is sold as the solution to a bottleneck most rollups have not reached; a large share of them do not produce enough data per block to justify anything beyond posting calldata. The purchase is a narrative, not a load. The narrative gets repriced; the blocks stay half empty.

The AI-agent fraud ring I documented earlier this year closed the loop. A bot network controlling fifteen social accounts manufactured demand for tokens with no underlying activity. The techniques were old โ€” stolen personality data, synthetic engagement, staged volume โ€” but the tooling was new and cheap. Five million dollars moved out of retail wallets into a shell company in Seoul. Repricing had become fully automated. A profile picture is not a shield against fraud.

Inequality inside this market follows the same K. The beneficiary of a repricing economy is whoever already holds the repriced asset. Airdrops distribute claims, but the value of those claims is set by the exit liquidity who arrive later. The farmer with a cost basis near zero and the retail buyer at the top of the range do not share a wealth trajectory, even when they hold the same token. The report's K-shaped split is not an externality of this market. It is the mechanism.

The bulls are not wrong about everything, and pretending otherwise is how a critic loses an audience.

Price discovery is legitimate. Capital formation has always run ahead of production โ€” railroads, electrification, fiber, the internet build-out โ€” and in every case the market repriced claims on future output before that output existed. Asset inflation can be a rational forward discount rather than a bubble, and repricing that anticipates real productivity is the mechanism by which capital gets allocated to the thing that eventually produces. The crypto market's wager is that programmable settlement becomes real infrastructure. That wager may pay.

The McKinsey thesis, as relayed, is also weaker than it sounds. It never defines wealth โ€” net household worth, aggregate assets, leverage included or not โ€” and it never defines the real economy it outran. Nominal GDP, real GDP, industrial output: each supports a different conclusion. A divergence that cannot be defined cannot be verified, and a claim that cannot be verified should not be traded on. The only genuine advantage this industry holds is that its repricing is auditable in real time. You cannot mark a private equity portfolio to market. You can mark a wallet. That transparency is the honest half of the crypto thesis, and it is worth defending.

The number to watch in 2026 is not the wealth figure. It is the distance between repricing and settlement โ€” how much of on-chain market capitalization is backed by trades that would survive a withdrawal of liquidity. Watch for capital expenditure that appears on a ledger rather than in a chart. Watch for yield sourced from revenue instead of emission.

Without legal definitions of what counts as production and what counts as revaluation, audits remain theater. The ledger is public. The definitions are not โ€” and that gap is where the next sixty billion dollars will disappear.
