And as someone who has spent years thinking about governance structures and the human element of financial systems, I can tell you that the questions we should be asking go far beyond whether this is technically possible.

Part II: The Context — From Crypto Innovation to Wall Street Ambition

To understand what Armstrong is really proposing, we need to understand the journey of the perpetual contract. And the mechanism has proven remarkably robust, surviving multiple market crashes, exchange failures, and extreme volatility events.

Now, Armstrong is looking at this proven mechanism and asking a simple question: why shouldn't this apply to traditional equities? Why should stock trading be limited to market hours? And the demand for extended trading hours is real — we've seen it in the growth of after-hours trading, in the popularity of platforms like Robinhood that democratized access, and in the persistent interest in crypto-style trading mechanics among traditional investors.

But here's where the story gets complicated. Because what Armstrong is proposing isn't just a technical innovation — it's a regulatory challenge that strikes at the heart of how we've organized financial markets for nearly a century. And it's a challenge that reveals deep tensions between innovation and protection, between efficiency and stability, and between the ethos of crypto and the realities of traditional finance.

Part III: The Core — What Stock Perpetuals Would Actually Mean

Let me be clear about what I'm about to say: the technical feasibility of stock perpetuals is not the question. The mechanism is proven. The infrastructure exists. The challenges are regulatory, structural, and philosophical. And understanding those challenges requires us to look at the full picture of what this proposal would mean.

The Technical Reality

From a purely technical standpoint, stock perpetuals are not a new frontier. The core components — order matching, liquidation engines, funding rate calculations — have been battle-tested in crypto markets for nearly a decade. Platforms like dYdX have demonstrated that decentralized perpetuals can handle billions in daily volume. Hyperliquid has shown that a high-performance chain specifically designed for derivatives can compete with centralized exchanges. The technology is not the bottleneck.

The real technical challenge lies in the data infrastructure. Crypto perpetuals rely on price feeds from crypto exchanges, which are relatively straightforward to aggregate. Stock perpetuals would require reliable, manipulation-resistant price feeds for traditional equities — a more complex challenge given the fragmented nature of equity markets and the potential for price manipulation across different venues.

This is where the oracle problem becomes central. Chainlink, Pyth, and other decentralized oracle networks have made significant strides in providing reliable price data for traditional assets. But the stakes are higher when you're dealing with the world's largest companies. A price manipulation attack on a stock perpetual could have cascading effects that extend far beyond the crypto ecosystem.

Based on my experience auditing DeFi protocols, I can tell you that the oracle layer is often the weakest link in any synthetic asset system. The Howey Test, which determines whether an asset qualifies as a security, adds another layer of complexity. If a stock perpetual is deemed to be a security, it would fall under SEC jurisdiction, with all the disclosure and registration requirements that entails. If it's deemed to be a futures contract, it would fall under CFTC jurisdiction, with a different set of requirements. And if it's deemed to be something in between — a hybrid instrument — the regulatory path becomes even murkier.

Armstrong's call is essentially a demand for regulatory clarity. He's saying: "We have a proven mechanism, we have demonstrated demand, and we have the infrastructure to make this work. The only thing standing in the way is a regulatory framework that hasn't caught up with financial innovation."

And he's not wrong. The United States invented the modern derivatives market — the CME, the options exchanges, the sophisticated clearing and settlement infrastructure that underpins global finance. But the regulatory framework that governs these markets was designed in a different era, for a different type of market participant, and it's struggling to accommodate the innovations of the digital age.

The Market Structure Question

Beyond the regulatory maze, there's a deeper question about market structure. Stock perpetuals would represent a fundamental shift in how equity derivatives are traded. The traditional model involves exchange-traded futures and options, cleared through central counterparties, with strict position limits and margin requirements. The crypto model involves continuous trading, funding rate mechanisms, and often higher leverage.

The question is whether these two models can coexist, or whether the crypto model would eventually displace the traditional one. And that's a question that goes to the heart of how we think about financial market design.

I've spent years studying the governance structures of decentralized protocols, and I've come to believe that the most successful systems are those that can adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining core principles. The traditional derivatives market has evolved over decades, incorporating lessons from market crashes and regulatory reforms. Part IV: The Contrarian Angle — The Blind Spots in the Innovation Narrative

Because while I believe that stock perpetuals represent a genuine innovation with real potential, I also believe that the narrative around them is missing some critical blind spots. And as someone who has watched the crypto industry repeatedly overpromise and underdeliver, I think it's important to look at what's not being said.

The crypto perpetual market has deep liquidity because it's a concentrated market with a relatively small number of assets. The equity market is vastly larger and more fragmented. Whether stock perpetuals would actually provide the liquidity benefits that proponents claim is an open question.

And there's a deeper concern: if stock perpetuals were to attract significant volume away from traditional equity markets, they could fragment liquidity and make price discovery less efficient. This is a risk that regulators are likely to consider, and it's a risk that the innovation narrative tends to gloss over.

The Governance Question

Finally, there's the governance question. Who would govern a stock perpetual market? Would it be a centralized exchange like Coinbase, with its own rules and incentives? Would it be a decentralized protocol, with token holders voting on parameters? Or would it be a hybrid model, with traditional financial institutions and crypto platforms sharing governance responsibilities?

Based on my experience with DAO governance, I can tell you that this is not a trivial question. The governance structure of a financial market determines everything from risk parameters to dispute resolution to the distribution of value. And getting it wrong can have catastrophic consequences.

And the question of how to govern a market that spans both traditional and crypto finance is one that we haven't even begun to answer.
